Chapter 7 : IT Strategy & Planning

Strategy is a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim . IT strategy is a comprehensive plan that information technology management professionals use to guide their organizations.

The success of an executive information system (EIS) depends upon many factors, including providing support for the strategic management process (SMP). The SMP is comprised of four phases: environmental scanning, strategy formulation, strategy implementation, and strategic control.

EIS has the potential to provide information that support the Strategic Management Process such as improve the efficiency and effectiveness of executives who use it. Successful systems usually support the business objectives. A well design EIS can support strategic control by compare actual performance against budget, goals, standards and benchmarks. Some systems include text-based applications that track progress on the accomplishment of specific objectives. It also help the organization to focus on the things that need to be done well. A good system is actually capable to support the overall strategic management process.

Most EIS software uses a web browser for the user interface, which provides easy access to data on a company's intranet and from the internet. Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) allow users to perform multidimensional analysis.

Chapter 5 & Chapter 6

Chapter 5 : Enterprise Information System

An enterprise information system (EIS) is any kind of information system which improves the functions of an enterprise business processes by integration.

Enterprise information systems (EIS) are the large complex software systems and tools underlying many of the university’s core administrative and academic-support processes. Examples include the systems associated with finance, research support, human resources, student administration, course management, and several others.

With global operations in place, there is a need for suitable Enterprise Information Systems (EIS) such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and E-Commerce (EC) for the integration of extended enterprises along the supply chain with the objective of achieving flexibility and responsiveness.

SAP, Oracle, Peoplesoft, J.D Edwards and Baan are the big five vendors of ERP in global market. SAP Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Vantage Point Consulting Sdn Bhd, SYMIX Computer, HSO Business System, YNY Technology, IFS Malaysian Sdn Bhd, NWS Solutions (M) Sdn Bhd and NEC Malaysian are the vendors of ERP in Malaysia Market. These Companies spend a lot of money in the design and implementation of EIS in particular ERP systems with the objective of achieving an integrated global and local supply chain.

The main reason of implementation of ERP system is to re-engineer business process through a uniform information system. ERP system able to reduce all costs including inventory, labor, and overhead. It also can increase sales, efficiency, effectiveness and customer satisfaction.

There are many success record in many international companies such as Cisco systems, Eastman Kodak, Autodesk, IBM, Fujitsu Microelectric, Panasonics, Chevron Texaco and Tektronix. Chevron Texaco improved it supply chain management through ERP system and achieved a profit $100 miillion every year.

  • Smart Tag, Radio using RFID and Vehicle Tracking System (VTS) is several example of mobile, wireless & pervasive computing

Factor contribute to using mobile, wireless & pervasive computing:
  • Low Price
  • Bandwidth Improvement
  • Vendor marketing example Lazada and Zalora
  • Cell phone culture

Application of mobile, wireless & pervasive computing in financial:

Inter-organizational information systems play a major role in improving communication and integration between partnering firms to achieve an integrated global supply chain. There is a growing demand for research and applications that will provide insights into issues, challenges, and solutions related to the successful applications and management aspects of EIS.

Types of technologies IOS:
  • Global systems - information systems connecting two or more companies in two or more countries.

First Class MIS750

Last Saturday is my first class for the subject Management Information System (MIS) for the MBA class with Associate Prof Dr Norzaidi Daud. More info about him click here.

What i learned today???

I learned about the basic concept in Information Technology (IT)

The word of Management related with acronym of PODC stand for Planning, Organizing, Directing but sometime there is someone called it as Leading and last is Controlling. These actuallty is the FUNCTION of mangement in any organization to manage the scarcity of sourcess like Financial, Human@Labour, Technology and others resources.

Information is data from field through the data collection method like survey, observation or any relevant method to collect all the data.

Then the data or information become a Knowledge for us so we can innovate it into various type of System.

System is everything is related to computer or machine.

In order to produce the innovative and intelligent system there is some components of IT known as Hardware, Software, Network, Procedure and People.

The various system produce actually to help people especially the managers in organization to to some transaction process (TPS), to make decision and generate new idea or solve the problem (DSS), to support senior management (ESS), to support the lower management or clerical workers (OAS) and to support professional workers like accountant, doctor, lawyer and others (KMS).

These system support by components above to make it beneficial to user for example transaction process system (TPS) through the Automated Teller Machines (ATM)Most of the banking institutions in Malaysia own proprietary ATM networks. With the MEPS shared ATM network, the public is able to access their bank accounts and conduct transactions, such as cash withdrawals and balance enquiries, at any ATM machines nationwide within the MEPS network. Besides cash withdrawals, ATMs also provide an expanded range of services, such as bill payments, funds transfer between accounts and payment for shares subscription at initial public offerings.
